Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Why we fight...

Posted some of this below, but wanted to make clear up here that I think all the fights over what we like and why are in fact the only issues of real significance at the forum.

By defn, posting here at all is a complete waste of time, at some level, but it is generally about something we love (the Dead), and thus it follows that discussing WHY we love it is critically important. It helps us see what we can't see in others intially--we refine our own views while defending ourselves, and hearing (if we listen) to what the others say.

I politely beg to differ with those that say debates over eras are time wasters; questions about how to download this, or how to burn that, or which lovelight is best, or have you heard this new band are all worthy enough, BUT the single most important thing we can do here is to discuss WHY we love what we love (not to be confused with forcing you to love what I love).

Long time lurker logging on to say that if Dire is King, and Dancinbears is Queen (how about "Caliope Woman" if Queen is sexist?), then I nominate William Tell for Prime Minister of the Dead forum here at LMA.

Will continue lurking, just having fun. I like the old time stuff best too.

That's why we all hate pre-72 dead.........

Just kidding William!!!!

But seriously, I find a lot of great stuff (Some more some less) from all the years EXCEPT everything post mid eighties. With very few exceptions, I just can't get past it. (and I saw a lot of shows from there to the end)

I agree, that fighting is a good thing. I love to hear strong arguments for/against. I have gained a great respect for many, many, many a year/show from the posts here.

Agreed, discussionw with constructive presentations of differing opionions is very healthy and can sometimes alter ones point of view in a positive direction. After all, there is nothing sweeter than discovering something new to love about this band. Let the debates rage, as far as I'm concerned, I love reading the point/counterpoint stuff (as long as noone starts a rebuttal with "Jane, you ignorant slut" - nod to Dan Acroyd here), not only entertaining but often educational as well.
As for post nominations, I nominate myself for forum windbag.

Oh man, that was a great line ("...ignorant slut!") and you got me rolling with it (haven't heard it for too long).

There is a great example of how we can have our humor at no one's expense here at the forum.

Thanks for reminding me (hey--there's a topic: early SNL vs later...that first year, 75-76 was just amazing!).

Yup, the first two seasons were amazing. They also had a very good resurgence with Chris Farley's group.

What is it about overweight men on Coke that we find so appealing? One Piper and Two Jesters. And all three of them ended up killing themselves.

I was just talking about this the other day and would love your opinion. I'm a big SNL guy and feel 1985 was an amazing year with martin short, Chris guest and Billy crystal. Nobody mentions it though. I thought it was one of the best, but because Lorne Michales wasn't involved it seems to be erased for existance. Would love others thoughts.

Fav. sketch from that cast was Guest and Crystal as nightwatchmen. The "I hate when that happens" sketch.

Guest: So ya know, I took a whole box a those thumb-tacks, ya know. And I spread'em out all over the floor there...and just kinda' rolled around in'em there. Then I took a bath in rubbing alcohol...Boy, talk about pain....

Crystal: Aw geez, I hate when that happens....

Guest: You're tellin'me...

Guest: Next day I took one of those uhhhh....whadyacallit....

Crystal: Coal miner's light?

Guest: Yeah, coal miner's light...yeah, I turned it on and let it get real hot....

Enough already...

I won't disagree that there are some back and forths on this forum which, at times, tire me. However, the debate over the various sounds and eras of the GD is not one of them. For the record (who be the secretary of this forum?), i am largely partial to late '60s, much of the '70s, and a scattering of shows throughout the '80s, and very, very little of the '90s. That being said, however, there was a thread here last night that brought up the 8/22/93 Autzen show, and like a good little disciple, i obediently activated the stream, and gave a listen. More surprise me when i found the show a very listenable one, and one i plan on seeking out somewhere in lossless. Will it gravitate toward my fave shows all time? The likelihood, well, probably not. But was it worth the listen, and worth being brought up on the forum? Damn straight it was. So, just my two rupees, but let the debate roar on, here, there, or anywhere.

That is it in a nutshell--one of the perks of these debates. I never thought for one minute I would listen to his beloved 9-18-87 (not sure I have the date right, but the one where Jerry sings La Bamba; see, I didn't 'archive' it in my collection since I thought I would just listen once and discard...no offense, Dire!) and reply to Dire with anything less than, "yeah, okay, but..." Just the opposite: made a 'for the car' CD and find myself listening to it regularly...shocking for me, absolutely shocking.

I for one find the LaBamba tune in the middle of Good Lovin one of the reasons to love this band. It slides in and out perfectly, the crowd goes wild, Jerrys spanish seems wonderful, and not a note is missed. i think they may have actually played it acouple times. That was a good show, by the way.

I had the post space from the dead head hour on a loop my whole senior year of HS. " me and you and good lovin too" always stuck with me on this version. Also loved the hey pocky breakout RI. Being underage at the time, I was shocked we didn't get hauled away for open container. The cops were all over the place for that Prov. run

the friggin cops at Prv were always ridiculous - dead or not - sittin like the roman legions upon their horses with their batons. a bunch of total assholes. they always made a decent situation worse don't ya think??? great indoor venue - speakers all throuhout the halls and the halls all carpeted - could dance anywhere and hear the show in full stereo - but outside sucked - the indoor security was great - bunch of cool dudes who would even dance with the heads. again - outside = gestapo, inside = sgt schultz good times overall since 84 when i saw my first show there.

summer right before I went to college. Little feet opened. The guys I was with were able to bring a jug/cooler into the place. Secruity was cool. Just as we got situated on the field each guy takes a glad baggie of booze out of their pants and mixes it. The hanglider during bird song. Amazing. To this day I still couldn't tell you how to get there. Boondocks bigtime

You know, i've heard about this fave show of Dire's from '87. I confess to having only two shows from that entire year, one from the Greek and the other from Shoreline. In fact, for the years '86 thru '94 i have a total of 14 or 15 shows. But that '87 show def. sounds like a show i should seek out and listen to. Thanks to both you and wolfboy for the recommendation.

It's really simple, and if you recall the "how old are you?" thread, the opinions regarding when the dead were at their best match the age group that submits the post. Folks gravitate toward things they know...and likewise away from what they don't.

The advantage that some of us dinosaurs have, is that we have had the benefit and hindsight of being around for the whole run. I think in general, the best guidance comes from folks that have had the experience for the longest time. BUT, it really has to come from a reasonably objective source.

.... sonny, let me tell you one thing, just because I like an 87 show, doesn't mean I'm copping the same viewpoint. Whippersnappers. Jesus.

I call it rock n roll evolution. Every band evoloves, and in most cases sounds worse as time goes by. Led Zeppelin sounded like crap in the late seventies and eighty, no where near the music they played from 69-75. Is Pink Floyd's Divison Bell better than Animals? I think not.I won't even bring up the Stones. 30 years on the road would wear out anybody, even the greatest band of all time. We were just lucky to be there. No matter what period it was, there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.Since this is my first post I would like to say Thank You to all of the tapers and people who uploaded these great shows. Thank you all very much. Have a safe and awsome holiday season.
